What is Urethroplasty?
Urethroplasty is a surgical procedure performed to treat urethral strictures, a condition where the urethra becomes narrowed due to scar tissue, leading to difficulty or pain during urination. It is considered the gold-standard, long-term solution for urethral strictures and is usually recommended when less invasive treatments like dilation or internal urethrotomy have failed or are unsuitable.
Types of Urethroplasty Techniques
- End-to-End (Anastomotic) Urethroplasty: In cases where the stricture is short, the narrowed section of the urethra is completely removed and the two healthy ends are reconnected (anastomosed) to restore normal urine flow.
- Augmentation Urethroplasty: When the stricture is too long for simple reconnection, a graft (usually a tissue patch) is used to widen the urethra. This tissue is commonly harvested from the inside of the cheek or lip (buccal mucosa graft), known for its durability and compatibility.
Both procedures aim to permanently restore the urinary passage and provide long-term relief from symptoms. If performed successfully, patients often enjoy a dramatic improvement in urination and quality of life, with very low recurrence rates.
What Causes Urethral Strictures?
Urethral strictures can occur due to a variety of reasons that lead to damage or scarring of the urethra. Common causes include:
- Previous endoscopic urological procedures or catheter use
- Pelvic trauma (e.g., traffic accidents, hip fractures)
- Falls or blunt force injury to the pelvis or groin area
- Untreated or recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
When to Consider Urethroplasty?
If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you may be a candidate for urethroplasty:
- Weak urine stream
- Frequent urination or urinary urgency
- Pain or burning during urination
- Urinary retention (inability to fully empty the bladder)
- History of recurring urethral dilations or failed internal urethrotomy
