What is Smart Lens? (Trifocal Intraocular Lens)

Smart lenses are trifocal intraocular lenses that are mostly used in the treatment of cataract patients over the age of 40, allowing patients to see far, near and intermediate distances clearly. After the operation, the need for the use of glasses is eliminated for the patients. Smart lenses are also known as trifocal lenses.

They can also be used for myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism patients whose eye structures are not suitable for laser treatment.

The smart lens (trifocal intraocular lens) helps to provide clear and quality vision for the patient at all distances by flexing according to the patient’s field of view and the point he wants to focus at that moment.

How Smart Lenses Work

Light entering the eye from different distances is refracted from the natural lens of our eye and merges into a single focal point on the retina. Thus, we perceive the image. Our natural lens in our eyes does this by flexing itself according to different focal points. The same principles apply to the trifocal intraocular lens. It makes it possible to focus the light coming from far, near and middle distance with a single lens. With Smart Lenses, it is possible to adjust the focal distances where the person has problems in focusing. In addition, smart lenses can be selected according to the eye type of the person. In other words, smart lenses can be customized according to the needs of the person. Thus, they eliminate the need for multiple different distance glasses.

What are the Usage Areas?

Smart lenses are used in the treatment of patients with cataract disease caused by the loss of transparency of the natural eye lens or in the treatment of patients with age-related shortsightedness. It is a permanent treatment method for both cataracts and age-related nearsightedness. These treatments are based on the principle of removing the natural lens from the eye and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens.

Bifocal lenses are lenses that help us see for near and far vision.

To Whom Can Smart Lens (Intraocular Lens) Treatment Be Applied?

Patients over the age of 40 who have vision problems at a distance or near or both and who have vision problems at intermediate distances are candidates for treatment. Each eye with a smart lens will be able to see both far and near by itself.

For those younger than 35-40 years old, smart lens treatment can be applied even if the eye number is too high to be corrected with laser.
